If you’ve decided to pick up running as a hobby or a sport then you’ll need some equipment to get you started. Here’s a quick list of what you’ll need:
1. Running Shoes – don’t buy shoes from a store other than a running-specific store. Your feet are the most important part of your body. Don’t go to Payless or the Shoe Barn expecting a good outcome.
2. Synthetic socks – cotton holds onto moisture. Wet socks means blisters. If you hope to make it further than a few miles you must get synthetic socks.
3. Water storage – if you don’t mind the water belts, then find one that has an even distribution of bottles on the left hip and the right hip. Some belts have one bottle and that usually leads to a goofy fit as it bounces around while you run. With one bottle on the left hip and one on the right, at least the belt will bounce evenly. Personally I prefer a camel back pack because it holds a lot of water and doesn’t bounce around nearly as much.
4. Dry fit clothing – just like with your socks, you’ll want to make sure your shorts, shirt and hat wick the sweat away from your skin to keep you light and dry. The majority of running gear now made is composed of wicking material so these won’t be hard to find.
5. Foam roller – to roll out sore, tight muscles you’ll need a foam roller. These are a life-saver in the world of running, especially if you develop IT band issues. You can find one for about $20 at Target and any running or yoga store.
6. Running watch – find something light, simple and with a chrono and interval setting on it. The Ironman series makes a great set of cheap and functional running watches that you can usually get for under $75.
There you have it. The quick and dirty list of running gear essentials. With just a couple hundred dollars you’ll be ready for several months of running. The shoes and socks will likely need replacing every couple of months but the rest of the gear will last for years if taken care of.
