After all the warnings, I gave my son a new thing to try on his first day running Varsity cross country. He had to travel 2 hours to race and wait 45 min more for his turn. Gave him smoothie, 2 ww toast, butter, no peanut butter b/c I thought fat & protein would take too long to digest. I'd also heard bananas actually take a long time to digest? In trying to give him fluids and electrolytes I gave him a big thing of orange juice. He ended up hungry and, worse, side ached the worst of his life he said. Ended up walking. I felt terrible about it! So is 2 hours long enough to digest the fat in peanut butter and actually give fuel? And can someone explain why orange juice might have caused the side aches. He said he had plenty of time to use bathroom, didn't feel "sloshy". And doesn't oatmeal end up feeling thick and sluggish in stomache? He also has some evening competitions. Same rules apply?

I recently started drinking the all natural nestle jamba energy drinks before a run. They are made with fruit juice with caffeine and nothing artificial. It has not affected me negatively at all and it gives me that burst of energy I need to get through. I also sometimes have a piece of whole wheat toast with all natural peanut butter.

I curious about what to eat before my morning run (3-5mi). Is a banana or a handful of almonds enough, or should I get up earlier and eat something more substantial?

@Paymar - typically it takes about 2 hours to properly digest a meal and have the nutrients readily accessible for use in activity. I'd recommend eating your meal a bit earlier and think you'll find it easier on your stomach as well. Also, since you're only doing about 4 miles and some hurdles, I would presume that you'll burn somewhere around 400 - 800 calories. There are approximately 30 grams of carbohydrates in one large banana. And, since there are 4 calories per gram in a carbohydrate, you could conceivably eat 2 bananas and some toast before the run and have consumed plenty of calories prior. Then finish off the workout with another 1-2 bananas (or the equivalent amount of carbohydrate from another source). The Funfetti cake is loaded with simple carbohydrates and ideally you should consume complex carbohydrates since they are a better source of fuel. That's also why I would recommend more bananas than cake :)

Just my $0.02 based on personal experimentation with foods prior to a run.

I just ate 2 and a half small pieces of funfetti cake, a bowl of cereal, a glass of water, toast, and a half of a banana. It's 5:00 and I have track at 6:00. I'll probably run 4 miles and do hurdles. Is it okay because it will haflway digest by the time I start? I ate the funfetti cake first, so it should be pretty well digested within 60 minutes. I drank the water last to wash it all down.

@Claire - I don't know many runners that go with milk before a run. It is a great supplement to take immediately after a long run of longer than an hour since it has enzymes that lower muscle damage levels and protein for recovery. I'd recommend not taking it before a run since it can upset your stomach and isn't the ideal formula of complex carbohydrates.
